Me and My Guitar – Part 1

What originally inspired me to play, and how I began

I thought it would be nice to tell you my story, and give you some insight into the journey the guitar and I have experienced throughout my life. Over a few blog posts the story will unfold and I will bring you along for the ride! I guess the best place to start is at the beginning: with exactly how and why I ever started playing in the first place.

It all starts back at the age of 14. Until then I had not become involved with music or the guitar; we just hadn’t crossed paths. My best friend at the time, a guy by the name of Joe, and I hung out a lot, as you tend do at that age! One day I went over to Joe’s place to just hang around and play and I noticed that he had a guitar in the corner of the room. Now Joe has older brothers, and I thought the guitar belonged to one of them as I had never seen it before or heard him talk about playing. So I asked him about it. He replied, “No, that’s my guitar! I have been playing some guitar!” I thought that was fascinating, and asked if he could play me something. So he picked up the guitar, and he just started to strum a few chords. Something came over me, at that particular time, at that exact moment, which told me that this is what I would be doing for the rest of my life.

In excitement I ran home and asked my Mom and Dad if I could buy a guitar, and told them that I wanted to take guitar lessons. They were a little bit reluctant, as they thought that if I got into music it would take away from my school and academic work. They more or less resisted, putting it nicely, and it was really disappointing to me. I really wanted to do this, to play guitar. So, I borrowed a guitar. I actually borrowed Joe’s guitar! I asked him if I could borrow it for a few days to check it out; I got myself a book on how to play guitar and I just started from there. That only lasted for a short while though, because obviously Joe asked for his guitar back, and I was back to the beginning again.

Next time I will tell you how I overcame this obstacle, and what I did might surprise you!
